We are looking for a Strategy Director

The strategy team works as part of multidisciplinary teams designing and building digital services for clients. The role of the strategy team is to articulate the strategic intent in our client work and ensure the products and services that are built, support it.

In order to do this we:

  • uncover, unpick and quantify the problems our clients face
  • uncover, and analyse the needs of end users and of the client’s organisation
  • work with designers to craft the Target Customer Experience, and the products and services that enable it
  • define product and service propositions and develop the digital strategies they serve
  • help clients implement the changes needed to support the strategy described in the Target Customer Experience, and agitate to keep the customer at the centre

Following the acquisition of Friday by PA Consulting, we are in the process of integrating teams and capabilities that form the digital arm of PA, or PA Digital. This means that the scope of our role might grow to also include elements of business and organisational design. It also means that at Director level, a strategist will be expected to play an active part in the integration process, and to have a genuine interest in bringing the best out of both the agency and consultancy world.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead the quality of strategic output, insight and research for clients, across a set of programmes of work or clients
  • Consult with senior clients to understand their business challenges
  • Work with clients and other disciplines to define how we’ll shape projects to address client problems - defining engagement model, project approach, tasks, deliverables, etc.
  • Set clear expectations about quality and speed of project output, and the quality of communications. Work hand in hand with other disciplines to make sure the resulting strategies are realisable and realised - and coach teams and contributors to exceed those expectations
  • Define strategic approaches to projects and problems - picking and justifying the mix of strategy activities and deliverables - and explain them convincingly to clients and collaborators
  • Design, commission and lead customer research and insight
  • Design and lead vision/ innovation workshop activities and co-creation sessions
  • Confidently sketch target customer experiences, journeys and interfaces in collaborative teams and in workshops with clients
  • Present and articulate digital visions, strategies and technologies to clients from marketing executives to Board level
  • Establish your own relationships with key clients. Actively work to identify, define and win more work from our existing clients
  • Model the behaviours that create the best project experience for all participants and create the best project outcomes. Set and manage clear expectations about these behaviours and coach individuals and teams to exceed them.
  • Evolve, codify and integrate our practice and techniques
  • Introduce, develop and refine new techniques, as part of a conscious plan to evolve our practice
  • Document key areas of our practice, through collaborative sessions and the creation of internal communications materials (for onboarding, etc.)
  • Proactively support the integration of the strategy capability within PA Digital: planning and supporting the facilitation of working sessions, and the definition of our role and contribution to the wider PA offering
  • Ensure knowledge sharing across the capability and across the company through peer-reviews, company meetings and any other relevant methods, and produce content to publish externally

Support casting and pipeline management

  • Help match the pipeline of work to the pipeline of people (so the people are challenged and growing, and the clients get the right talent for the best project outcomes, and the team is busy and hitting utilisation targets)
  • Accurately scope, estimate effort and define activities for complex projects and programmes of work (e.g. in proposals/SOWs)
  • Know the team well, their skills and interests; cast individuals in a way that will engage and challenge them. Help keep the people in the department thirsty to learn

Recruitment, Line management and training

  • Support recruitment, selection, and on-boarding of new members of the team
  • Line manage one or several strategist(s): supporting career development, mentoring and training, performance, grievance and disciplinary procedures and salary/ remuneration appraisals, and general line-management
  • Drive the continual development and improvement in the capability, knowledge and skills of the planning team through internal information and expertise sharing, curating external stimulus and through fostering a culture of continued hunger for “better”
  • Ensure the correct balance of skills within the team

This role is client facing and managerial, and you will be expected to deputise for the Chief Strategy Officer as necessary - internally and externally.

Key Skills

To be successful in this role you will need to be:

  • Accomplished at experience planning and service design, Digital strategy, system thinking, Analysis and consulting
  • Accomplished at using storytelling techniques (that are human, impactful, accessible and captivating) to convey information, argument and persuasion in formal pressured settings, to large senior audiences
  • Comfortable splitting your time, energy and attention across several projects and clients
  • Able to challenge and question using different critique techniques, offering praise when deserved; actively seeking feedback on own output and approach
  • Confident making guesses in public: comfortable proposing early hypothesis, as a starting point to collaborative iteration (happy being publicly wrong too)
  • Able to reconcile differences and opposing views to better enable collaboration
